Wānanga Responds to Rapidly Evolving Media Landscape

Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi is proud to announce a new and exciting educational offering in 2025: the New Zealand Diploma in Content Creation (Broadcasting) Level 5. This programme is designed for those passionate about storytelling in all its modern forms: radio, screen, podcasting, and digital media. It equips tauira (students) with the skills to thrive in today’s rapidly evolving media landscape.

Tauira have access to state-of-the-art technology and facilities at the NZ Radio Training School, located at Awanuiārangi's Manukau campus. Here, learners will experience hands-on education that empowers them to write, engineer, and produce their content across various platforms during the 40-week programme.

National Programme Co-Ordinator/Lecturer of Radio Broadcasting at Awanuiārangi - Lia Shelford-Toopi, shares some of the unique aspects of the programme.

“What sets this programme apart is its integration of te reo me ōna tikanga, grounding tauira in the rich cultural heritage of Aotearoa and providing a deep understanding of how iwi broadcasting intertwines with mainstream media.

“Tauira will not only develop their technical prowess but will also gain insight into the social, political, economic, cultural, and historical factors that shape media practices. This unique blend ensures graduates are culturally competent and prepared for real-world media environments.”

Lia deeply values the expertise of her team in delivering the programme.

“Our kaiako bring years of experience in the media industry, and our tauira value their expert knowledge. It’s a privilege to work alongside kaimahi who contribute such a diverse range of skills and insights. Their expertise also helps us maintain strong connections within the industry, including partnerships with Iwi Radio, which are crucial for creating meaningful career pathways.”

Graduates of the programme will be equipped to:

  • Research and analyse social, political, economic, cultural, and historical contexts to inform their media practice.
  • Apply creative and technical skills to produce content for a variety of media platforms.
  • Understand and apply business practices for distributing content to targeted audiences.
  • Operate professionally, reflecting on their skills and cultural competencies to excel in media environments.
