Te Kotahi a Tūhoe, ka kata te pō!

Te Waimana Kaaku will host the biennual Hui Ahurei ā Tūhoe this year and Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi are once again proud to sponsor and support the event.

The first Tūhoe festival was held in Rotorua at Mātaatua Marae in 1971.  This gathering of urban Tūhoe presented Tūhoe leaders with the opportunity to develop an inter-generational strategy that would see Tūhoe repatriate, revitalize, and reconnect succeeding generations to their traditional homelands, their reo and tikanga, with the vision to strengthen their cultural identity. Te Hui Ahurei-ā-Tūhoe was born there.

Te Hui Ahurei-ā-Tūhoe remains a strong unifying force for Tūhoe and a key vehicle for upholding the cultural traditions of Tūhoe including urban whānau. Matemateāone continues to underpin the strategy to preserve, protect, and strengthen Tūhoe cultural identity.  The festival returns to Te Waimana Kaaku in 2025.

It is expected that over 13,000 people will attend the Tūhoe Festival over the three-day event which includes disciplines such as traditional Tūhoe haka (tamariki and pakeke), tautohetohe, mahi toi, Kio-ō-rahi, netball, rugby and a battle of the bands.
